Enrique Leira MD, MS

Dr. Enrique C. Leira is a Board certified Vascular Neurologist with additional training in Epidemiology, and a translational animal stroke researcher. He is a graduate from the University of Santiago de Compostela Medical School in Spain. He did his Neurology residency at St. Louis University Hospital. He did his Vascular Neurology Fellowship and a Masters in Epidemiology at the University of Iowa. He is currently directing the Comprehensive Stroke Center at the University of Iowa. Dr. Leira is the principal investigator of the University of Iowa RCC from StrokeNet, a NIH-funded research infrastructure he built to increase the participation of rural patients in stroke trials. This is aligned with his research interest, which focused on facilitating clinical trial participation for these geographically-challenged populations. This included AIRDOC, the first stroke trial to deliver an intervention during helicopter transfer to a tertiary center. He is currently working on an NIH funded study to study the effect of helicopter transportation on animal models of embolic stroke undergoing reperfusion with rtPA.
